Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for NYC in Inaugural Address

During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
