Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
