The World is Invited to Become the Additional Haim Member.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple famous supporters have also petitioned for the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos often feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness required a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the band will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
