Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

Crew Member during journey
Amanda Nguyen, a women's health researcher, was aboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in different industries.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
