A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
